Bondage

This piece was inspire by a dream I had a few weeks ago, there were some wacky things involved but the story in dream was about sisters.  The dream made me think about the relationship that I have with my younger sister, how once we were so close but now I feel like we are not. The idea of sisterhood is about sisters can reflect on one another because they lived in the same life style and might share some common interest even if we are the complete opposites in traits they’re still compatible.   I’ve been away at college for four years now and being away from my younger sister I feel like we’re fading away from each other. We’ve barely talked to each other, even when I’m home during the holiday, and I’ve heard she has been doing great without my help, some sister I am. Hopeful in the near future when I’m done with college we can rekindle again and have that strong bond like we use to have.

For starters, I tried different hand positions touching a mirror to use as reference for this piece. It was not as easy as I thought but this photo I felt was the strongest one to use. I decided to take a break from just using acrylics paints this week and try my hand in mix media. I love using charcoal pastels and water together, I think it gives the surface of the paper a nice smooth texture. I’ve haven’t touch color pencils for a while but I remember it was my favorite media to work with in high school, so I used them for coloring the hands. Hands I believe to represent unity, strength and protection, I wanted them to be the center in this piece with the two hands still touching each other to show a bond between them. For the circles, I chose the color blue because it represents trust, calmness and to give it the appearance that the hand is actually touching the surface of water. When looking at your reflection in the water, it’s the same reflection as looking into a mirror but in a darker tone. With this in comparison to how me and my sister are the same but again not really and our bond has faded away into the darkness. Lastly, I added some small splatter paint around the water ripples to give it more of a water effect and I personally love to use splatter paint.
