Shattered Identity

Eyes have been said to be a gateway into a person’s soul and the shattered glass could stand for the fragileness of a person’s soul. In this case, the glass cover has been cracked and shattered to reveal a person’s true identity. Thinking back of the times in my middle school years (the worst years of my life), where I had to put a smile on my face just so my family didn’t have to worry about me when deep down I was going through depression.

Another goal behind this piece was about experimenting techniques and adding multiple layers. To see what would happen if I tried new things and improvised them as I went along. I was also keeping to the theme of light versus dark like I’ve done in my last two pieces.

Apart from eyes, another way I thought to show identity through a symbol was to apply red paint to my hands, leave fingerprints on the surface and think of it as blood stains. I was thinking like how a crime investigator would identify a person: through fingerprints and blood.

For the white wash effect, I thought it would be a way to show an effort of putting the fragile piece back together again. I didn't really work in my favor in the end and fully regret it now. Oh well, live and learn.
