2 Outside of Class Critiques

An art student, Niko, stopped by and noticed I was working on the finishing touches to the collection piece ‘The Dancer’s Sins’. He commented on how beautiful the work was all together and made some great recommendation.  ‘Dancer’s Sin of Gluttony’ (Orange) gave me some extreme difficulty to work with; it doesn’t stand the strongest on its own unlike the others and couldn’t be easily identified on what the subject was. Niko pointed out that one of the problems might have been that unlike the other six of the canvas Gluttony didn’t have white skin tones, therefore makes it less cohesive and doesn’t  fitting in with the others. Another piece of advice was to make the subject more obvious in this piece was focusing around the stomach area by manipulating with light and shading so it appeared the stomach was overlapping the waist band of the dress. I didn’t want it to be too obvious but I did take his advice and turned out much better than before. He even gave me some tips on how to framing them the cheap yet elegant way.

I ask Savanna Jones, BFA student, for a critique on the piece ‘The Night Owl’ which I am renaming ‘A Nocturnal Soul’. Also her friend Allison Struck shared her thoughts about the piece as well. Both girls first questioned on how the piece was done right off the bat. I describe the process to them and they said they liked how if gives the overall piece some dimension. They also really favored the owl being the main subject because owls can symbolizes so many things such as wisdom and elegance which is why Savanna heavy suggested I change the title of this piece. The cools reminded them of royalty, nighttime and a calm relaxing tone. Savanna also liked the feathers of the owl were smooth and how some of the colors corresponds with the stylized background image. Savanna critique on the solid blacks in the background, she believes more could have been done to them such as textures of a tree or some sort of value into it.

The Night Owl

This week I wanted to try something new but also inventive. One of my canvases had a distinctive hole near the top left corner and instead of throwing it away I decided to repurpose it. I had this idea to cut out different areas out of the canvas to give it more three-dimension as well as the appearance of a window into another world. The background was done by using watercolor painting, letting them drip to create unique marking. The colors also help evoke calmness and mystery. The owl symbolizes knowledge and femininity, this reflects on how much I have learned in the past four years in college. I choose to go with the barn owl for a couple of reasons, I thought the color of the owl’s feather would complement the background colors and it is one of my favorite animals. Cutting off the areas in the canvas proved to be harder than I thought. Original I planned to have thinner lines towards the edges of the canvas but I value not cutting off my fingers more. Overall I’m proud of what I have created.

Greed, Gluttony, Lust, and Wrath

This week I focused on finishing the four remaining sins: Greed, Wrath, Lust, and Gluttony.

Same treatment as before with oil paint used for figures and acrylic background applied by mix media technique .This weeks techniques included multiple layers, paint applied to card then swiping aggressively, stencils, paint drippings and bubble wrap. Last week I thought using lace would leave an interesting print after it was applied but it was a failed attempt. However I did find some dead sea sponges and used that to create some interesting texture on the figure's dress, makes it look more like sequins.

This is how all seven canvases are display.
Defiantly need to go back in and make a few minor adjustments, such as the skin tone and contouring the figure more.
